Should you take Vit K if you supplement with Vit D?

It’s safe to take 2,000 IU of D3 with or without K

Many positive reasons to take D3

We strongly recommend taking an extra vitamin D3 supplement in the winter months – because an estimated 85% of us are well below the optimum blood levels of vitamin D.

Extra vitamin D3 (which is twice as effective as Vitamin D2) has many health benefits that include:

  • a healthier immune system
  • reduced risk of flu
  • cardiovascular health
  • joint health
  • normalised cell division
  • even a role in inhibiting cancer progression

Vitamin D influences more than 200 genes!

We therefore offer a high dose Vitamin D3 – the natural form your body makes in response to sunlight. See https://nutrishield.com/the-products/vitamin-d/

The K question – concerns calcium

But a couple of our customers have asked –

Should vitamin D be taken with Vitamin K?

And if so, why?

It is true that taking vitamin D in combination with high dose calcium supplements without taking vitamin K – or the leafy green vegetables that contain vitamin K – could theoretically cause a health issue.

Here’s how.

Vitamin D helps take calcium from your food as digested in the gut to the blood, to be utilised, not just for healthy bones and teeth, but for muscle and nerve function.

Vitamin K is involved in a process that takes calcium from the blood (via a protein called osteocalcin), to be used to mineralise (i.e. build) bones.  It is also important in the production of collagen.

Without vitamin K, calcium can be deposited, not in bones, but in soft tissue like arteries, veins and skin. And that can cause problems that include hardening of the arteries, calcification of blood vessels and kidney disease.

In other words, it is possible that very high levels of vitamin D, without vitamin K, could lead to calcium being deposited where it is not wanted.

A 2,000 IU Vitamin D3 supplement will NOT cause a calcium problem even without K

(a) If you are taking extra vitamin D on top of NutriShield Premium or Essentials

NutriShield contains an optimum (100mcg) combined level of Vitamin K1 and K2. So you will be getting D with K.

(b) If you are taking extra vitamin D, but not taking NutriShield

The daily level of Uni-Vite’s vitamin D3 supplement is 2,000 IU. This has been determined as optimum from a very full literature search and is safe even without extra K. Indeed, specialists in the field use doses as high as 10,000 IU without adverse effects on blood calcium levels.

Natural sources of vitamin K1 include parsley, kale, and spinach. Natural sources of K2 include eggs and some cheeses.

But the answer to the original question is – vitamin D3 at the level of 2,000 IU a day is safe. On the same page you can get enough vitamin D3 for the winter months for under 3p a day.
