As we age, cell damage increases while protective function declines
From the age of about 50, most people experience a decline in immune function, DNA repair ability, cellular energy and the hormones testosterone and oestrogen over time.
As all these decline, cell damage increases in parallel.
If we superimpose the rise of diseases like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis and cognitive impairment on a graph, we see all these illnesses begin to take off where the arrow is – in your mid to late 50s.
Because they are all triggered by accumulated damage to cells, and to DNA in particular.

Be proactive – the role of health supplements
We agree with every expert that the foundation of long-term health is your diet (and exercise). But overcoming these declines, and therefore reducing cell and DNA damage, is a BIG challenge. It therefore demands a far higher level of protective nutrients than is in most people’s diet.
That’s why we believe that the role of a supplement is less to correct deficiencies – although they do exist – and more to supply an extra level of nutrients that counteract cell damage.
Because if you reduce cell damage and improve mitochondrial efficiency, you reduce the risk of chronic illness.
That’s why we developed NutriShield Premium. It contains 43 nutrients that help to counteract the age-related declines in DNA repair, hormones and immune function. See: Healthy Living Anti-Ageing Supplements | UK |NutriShield
The 43 nutrients combat multiple ageing mechanisms, and are linked to a reduced risk of the diseases of old age. There is a large body of scientific research backing their effectiveness and safety.
Loss of cellular energy drives brain problems
Our newest supplement, Nicotinamide Riboside plus Apigenin, or NR+A, combines ideally with NutriShield Premium to help slow the decline in cellular energy, by boosting an essential molecule called NAD+. See NR+A, NAD+ Booster | Boost NAD+ for Healthy Ageing | NutriShield.
Nicotine Riboside (NR) is one of the few new anti-ageing supplements that have broad support from scientists in the field of ageing research.
Independent research shows that NR supports cellular energy, mitochondrial health, DNA repair, and regulates how cells respond to stress.
NR supplements can be protective
A summary paper concluded that :
“Boosting intracellular NAD+ concentrations using NR has been shown to provide protective effects against a broad spectrum of pathological conditions, such as neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes and hearing loss.”
[Ref: Emerging Role of Nicotinamide Riboside in Health and Diseases - PMC (nih.gov)]
Increasing NAD+ via Nicotinamide Riboside may be especially important for maintaining brain health. Your brain uses 20% of your energy output. That means it uses 400 calories worth of energy a day for the average woman – 500 for a man.
Is beta amyloid plaque build-up just a reaction to cell energy decline?
New research suggests that the build-up of beta amyloid plaques and tau tangles that characterise Alzheimer’s disease may not be the cause of this devastating problem – but a complicated reaction to a decline of energy to brain cells.
[Ref: Brain Metabolic Alterations in Alzheimer’s Disease - PMC (nih.gov)]

It's certainly true that numerous drug trials aiming to remove or reduce beta amyloid have all failed. Instead, could supporting mitochondrial health prevent or significantly delay the onset of dementia?
That is the view of an article in the New Scientist.
[Ref: Restoring the brain’s mitochondria could slow ageing and end dementia | New Scientist]
They state that:
“Malfunctioning mitochondria may underlie many of the most devastating brain conditions, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and Motor Neuron(e) Disease”.
It’s also the view in an excellent new book called The Age of Wellness by researchers Leroy Hood and Nathan Price, who conclude:
“We now believe that the Alzheimer’s key mechanism tackles metabolic energy deficits in the brain.”
This is certainly logical. If cells anywhere in the body fail to get enough energy, they malfunction and eventually die. In Alzheimer’s, many neurons stop functioning properly, lose connections with other neurons, and, too, eventually die. And inadequate cell energy now appears to drive that.
How can we support the creation of cell energy?
NAD+ is critical to creating ATP, which is the energy molecule created in your trillions of mitochondria. But there is a decline in NAD+ levels of as much as 50% from your 20s to mid 50s.
Of course, counteracting that decline takes more than a supplement like Nicotinamide Riboside. It requires a commitment to regular exercise and the sort of foods in the Delay Ageing food plan: The Delay Ageing Healthy Eating Food Plan| NutriShield.

Because many of these foods not only help protect mitochondria, but they also counteract inflammation and excess oxidation. And inflammation and oxidation (free radical action) damage mitochondria, which lessens energy output.
So maintaining brain health is complicated. But the latest research does support the range of nutrients in NutriShield Premium – featuring plant nutrients like curcumin, grapeseed and green tea extracts plus extra B complex nutrients and betaine, all of which we know support brain health.
And we see a clear role in brain health for NAD+ boosters like our Nicotinamide Riboside plus Apigenin. Alongside exercise and a mainly plant-based diet.

NutriShield Premium Health Supplement
NutriShield Premium was originally designed by Dr Paul Clayton, former Chair of the Forum on Food and Health at the Royal Society of Medicine.
It contains 6 different capsules, combining a total of 43 powerful nutrients to support healthy ageing and has been updated and improved every year since 2002 based on the newest longevity research.
Delay Ageing book explains the ageing process and how you can postpone it
Medical researchers agree that if you slow ageing, you also delay the onset of age-related disease. And we know that it’s not just nutrition. Sleep, reducing stress and cardio and strength exercise are also essential to longevity and ageing well.
My book Delay Ageing: Healthy to 100, published in 2020, explains the latest ageing science in an accessible way.
It’s been rated 5-star and I am sure you will get a lot of benefit from it, as so many have already.
